Physical Education

Philosophy

Physical education is an essential part of the school curriculum. The mission of physical education is to enable all students to enhance their quality of life through active living. It consists of a carefully planned sequence of activities, which promotes the development of motor skills, movement concepts, cognitive learning, problem solving, and social skills. Students are exposed to experiences that will encourage them to value physical activity and its effects on lifelong health and well-being.

News

I hope that everyone has been enjoying the great weather of late. This time of year when there is a temptation to hibernate in the house I am reminded of the importance of physical activity. In an article that came out last year, "Feel Burn, Feed Brain", there was information about the importance of physical education in schools, and the connection between physical activity and learning. According to this article science is showing that regular cardio workouts can help the areas of the brain that control memory and learning. Another area of the article discusses that 16% of those in America ages 6-19 are obese, increasing the risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems.

Since our return from our vacation Kindergarten students have been working on moving in different ways on scooters to improve their muscle strength. First, second and third graders have also been using scooters to work muscles in different areas. They have enjoyed playing scooter games like steal the chicken, follow the leader, and scooter hockey. Grades four, five and six have been working on a floor hockey unit and learning concepts, skills, and terms associated with hockey. Floor hockey is a fun, fast paced game, that is great for students' cardiovascular fitness. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders are looking forward to rock climbing and ascending other high ropes course elements in the near future.

For those looking for a great place to get outside and exercise, I've heard that the Hardwick Trails have been in nice shape. They are located behind Hazen and are great for snow shoeing and cross country skiing. The fee of $0 is definitely the right price! I'm looking forward to getting a chance to get there myself. For those looking for an evening of fun consider attending games and supporting our local sports teams. There are basketball games at the elementary school, and Hazen almost nightly. For an elementary school schedule you can see Tammi Smith. For information on Hazen games contact John Sperry at Hazen, or visit hazenunion.org and click on sports.

Wishing everyone a great February!

Sincerely,
Mike Baker
